About District Court
In 1716 A.D. Jaat ruler Raja Nandram’s son Bhoj Singh took over the rule of Hathras from the Rajput rulers. After Bhoj Singh, his son Sadan Singh became the ruler of Hathras followed by his son Bhoori Singh. It is believed that during the reign of Bhoori Singh, the temple of Lord Balarama was built at the fort of Hathras. After Shri Bhoori Singh, his son Raja Dayaram was crowned in 1775 A.D. In 1784, Scindia ruler Madhavrao established his regime around Hathras. The region was annexed by the British in 1803.
After independence of India, District Hathras was a Tehsil of District Aligarh in U.P. District Hathras was created pursuant to U.P. Government’s Notification No. C.M.70/1-5-97(85)/97 Rajaswa-5, Uttar Pradesh Shasan Rajaswa Anubhag-5 dated Lucknow, May 06, 1997. Though, it was renamed as District Mahamayanagar having its headquarter at Hathras but was restored to its original name Hathras in the year 2012. It was created consequent to reorganization of earlier District of Aligarh and Mathura. At present, District Hathras comprises of the area falling in the Sub Division/Tehsils of Hathras Sadar, Sikandrarao, Sasni and Sadabad.
The fort of Raja Dayaram is located at the heart of the city. The district courts are in the same fort & also an ancient Mandir of Sri Dauji Maharaj which is about 250 years old is located. It has been graced by the Idols of elder brother of Lord Krishna, Shesh Avtar Baldev Ji Maharaj and Mata Revti. It is believed that during the reign of Raja Bhuri Singh, this temple of Lord Sri Dauji Maharaj was built in the fort of Hathras. On the initiative of the then Tehsildar Sri Shyam Lal and his attorney Sri Ganeshi Lal, an Annual Mela of Sri Dauji Maharaj was started in the year 1912 and thereafter the said Mela now known as “Lakkhi Mela” is being celebrated every year on Dev Chhat in the month of Bhadra. Raja Bhuri Singh, the founder of above said Dauji temple was ancestor of Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh who also played an important role in India’s Freedom struggle.
Considering historical importance of the Raja Daya Ram Fort, the then Government of India vide its Notification No. 1645/1133M dated 22.12.1920 included it in the list of heritage monuments supervised by Archaeological Survey of India. It is also notable that Hon’ble Allahabad High Court was also pleased to allow a Public Interest Litigation wherein directions were issued to the Government of India, Archaeological Survey of India, Tourism Department of Government of Uttar Pradesh and the District Magistrate for protection of monument of National importance like Qila Raja Daya Ram Hathras and temple Sri Dauji Maharaj.
It is said that the first Court of Munsif Hathras was created in the year 1865. Later on, the strength of the Court was increased and at the time of creation of new Sessions Division on 16.01.1999, three Courts, including that of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate/Civil Judge (S.D.), Civil Judge (J.D.) and Additional Civil Judge (J.D.) were functioning at the outlying court Hathras. In addition, two Courts were also functioning at outlying court Sadabad. After creation of District Hathras, vide Uttar Pradesh Shasan’s Notification No. 3351/G/VII-Nyay-2/98-42G/97TC-Lucknow dated November 02, 1998, District Judge at Hathras was appointed. Sri Brij Nandan Tiwari took over the charge of 1st O.S.D./District Judge of Hathras on 16.01.1999 and after reorganization of District Aligarh and District Mathura and creation of a new District Hathras, the newly appointed O.S.D./District Judge and three other Judicial Officers at Hathras and two Judicial Officers at Sadabad were conferred the jurisdiction over the local limits of newly created District Hathras.
The inauguration ceremony of new Sessions Division at Hathras was formally held on 16.01.1999. Hon’ble Mr. Justice Brijesh Kumar, the then Acting Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court and Hon’ble Mr. Justice I.S. Gill the then Administrative Judge, graced the occasion.
